They scrambling to get main stream media coverage to heighten interest again. They just chose to do it in the worst, worst, worst possible way from a story perspective. It doesn't matter if Chandler is older then comic Carl. It doesn't matter if some comic storylines "wouldn't make sense" with an older Carl. Good writing can remix and change things to always make it work. Look at TV Carol VS comic Carol for example. The Walking Dead no longer makes the show for the fans, they make the show for the ratings.
